I’ll be honest: none of us is perfect, least of all me. I am not Your Royal Earthiness judging the gas-
guzzling, water-wasting, energy-consuming masses from my royal perch of Eco-conscious Perfection. I use gas and water and energy just like you. I drive 60 miles a day in my SUV. I water my lawn. I blow my nose in paper tissues. I don’t even know if my chocolate is fair trade. But one good thing I have going for me is that I love this planet. I mean really LOVE it.
I grew up in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado frolicking amongst deer and wildflowers. At a young age I came to the realization that those crystal clear mountain streams trickling down the slopes of the Continental Divide were the lifeblood of our country, and rights to every drop were heavily controlled and debated. The eagles soaring overhead were gulping in air that was growing more and more polluted. And those fragrant spruce forests were being cut down at an alarming rate. I wanted to save our planet. So I subscribed to Garbage Magazine, an environmental periodical that taught me about environmental issues around the world. I wrote letters to the President. I took to lecturing my family about turning off the tap and refraining from using paper towels. Good thing they love me.
Today I’m a writer, mother of two, and happily living in the mountains once again. And I’m a lot like you. I care about environmental issues, about taking care of the earth, about stopping global warming. But I don’t have a PhD in environmental science and I don’t want to picket oil drilling or live in a shoebox off the grid. I just want to learn practical ways to reduce my impact on the planet and how be a better steward to the environment—to practice a little bit of earthiness everyday. And I want to spread the word to as many like-minded people as possible in hopes that they too can reduce their impact. With a few helpful tips and resources, we can make a big difference. So come on, let’s get earthy together!
